Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty

Begin by reading the Big Book of Humpty Dumpty. While reading, ask many questions:

What is Humpty Dumpty?
Where do we get eggs? (common answer, from the store!)
Where is he sitting?
Is Humpty a boy or a girl?
What will happen if Humpty falls off the wall?
Who tries to help Humpty?
Is Humpty real?
ETC…

Before class,  put a big "brick" (those used for building blocks) in back of each child's chair. Talk about walls and see how many walls can be found in the classroom.  Ask the kids to look in back of their chairs and hold the bricks in front of them. Begin building a wall by taking turns stacking each brick on top of one another.  Count the bricks as our wall gets taller and taller.  Get an egg out of the fridge and pass it from child to child ("it feels cold) and ask "why is it cold?" The kids then help to give Humpty Dumpty a face by drawing, following cues ..."oh my, Humpty can't see, what does he need?", until a face is complete.  Recite the poem again and tease the kids by placing Humpty anywhere but on the wall...., in front, in back, under and next to.  Finally one child is asked to help by putting Humpty ON THE WALL!  Ask the kids to predict what will happen to Humpty when he falls off and ...you got it, poor Humpty falls off onto the plate below. The kids will scream with delight as the kings horses and men (Fisher Price toys) come to the rescue. You can  try and put Humpty together again with glue and tape, only to create a big mess! Repeat the activity all over again, only this time use a hard-boiled egg. The kids can predict what will happen and will be thoroughly confused when Humpty does not break after numerous falls off the wall.  Crack Humpty open and compare the cooked and uncooked eggs.  End the unit by letting each child crack an egg into a bowl and then mix and cook scrambled eggs.  Send home a sequencing story, a brief idea of what happened in class (perhaps to be duplicated at home) and a puzzle to be put together.
