Emergent Literacy

Emergent Literacy is an important building block for literacy. This section is for children who are struggling to learn to read and for younger children who will be reading soon. Early literacy emcompasses phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, selecting books of choice, holding a book, "reading" the pictures, and more. Phonological and phonemic awareness includes blending and segmenting sounds in words that help in the transition to conventional literacy and improve decoding skills. This section includes activities for phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and activities that move toward conventional literacy.
